3 Tips to Make the Most of a Full Linguistic Immersion

The very best way to learn a foreign language fast and furiously is to fully immerse yourself in studying - or, better yet, absorbing it - in its natural »habitat«, the country where it's spoken. It's always an unforgettable experience that will not only enrich your vocabulary, and skyrocket your linguistic knowledge through the roof, but also gift you with so many cultural insights, as well as with brand new gems of general life wisdom.
But - there's a but - you need to get ready for such a powerful journey, and here are three tips to keep you on track...
Get your feet wet beforehand
Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to learn anything from watching a movie in a language you know absolutely nothing about, and you're barely able to introduce yourself in? It's because the leap is just too huge! To really benefit from a language learning tool, you need to be careful about both your current linguistic level and the level you'd be confronted with if you decided to use this particular tool. So, if you're a beginner, start with reading very simple stories, full of basic, easy-to-grasp vocabulary and grammar. And, if you're planning a linguistic trip abroad, put »linguistic preparation« on your to-do list. Look at it as warming up sessions that will allow you to achieve maximum results once you're on destination.
Be fully present in the moment (yes, that includes thinking in the foreign language)
When you're there, and ready to rock, remember you've left your mother tongue at home, and it's time to embrace the one language you've traveled abroad for. In that spirit, forget any chatting and sharing in your own language with other participants (who might be your co-nationals or language learning enthusiasts that have been learning your native tongue, too - besides the foreign language you have in common), and try to always be fully present in each and every moment of your full immersion. Think, dream, breathe your target language - and talk talk talk, and then write write write, and listen listen listen, and talk, write and listen again! Be there. Be a sponge, or a super disc with expanding storage room, if you want. The point is, you must commit to your purpose, and give it all you have!
Switch from stress mode to play mode
There's no need to stress out over the pace in which you're making progress with your language learning! Every individual has their own timing, their own learning dance, and it can only hurt you if you start comparing yourself with others. Focus on enjoying what you're doing, and finding new ways to have fun while learning this language every single day. Play with it a bit, invent entertaining games to revise the content you've learned during the daily lessons, meet local people, buy interesting magazines, start a fun scrapbook with all the ticket/brochure memorabilia you've been gathering since you arrived... Just let go of all the concerns, and relax - believe it or not, that's the best recipe for a successful full immersion!
